Sheebah Karungi channelled her resentment against her father into the arts. She began dancing at 15, then got into music and since she released her hit single “Ice Cream”, Sheebah's star has kept rising. Here’s is Sheebah Karungi’s biography.
Sheebah Karungi was born on 11 November 1989. Her mother, Edith Kabazungu, comes from the Ankole region in Western Uganda while her father Mzee Ahamada Kimali Musoke is Rwandese.
When she was nine, she ran away from her father’s home to live with her poor mother in Kawempe thus had no relationship with her father. Due to the neglect of her father, Sheebah never visited him when he was bedridden. Despite his brother’s (Swaibu Snfuka) and Kimali Musoke sister’s efforts to mend bridges between the two, Sheebah remained unforgiving and didn’t attend his burial as per his instructions.
Her brother condemned her insistence to remain unforgiving but her mother Edith Kabazungu understood Sheebah. She opined that her father’s expectations were unreasonable after he disowned her and left them penniless.
Consequently, she was expelled from the clan and forced to drop her name Samalie Njagala which she was given in memory of her late aunt. Her family has also dared her to renounce their name as they deem her as a disgrace for the way she dresses and the career she’s chosen to pursue.
“Let her come home officially and declare that the name our father gave her is dropped. We also don’t want to associate with her. We also don’t need anything from her. Let her keep her fame and money. She has ashamed our family enough.” One of Sheebah’s sisters told a local publication.
Sheebah Karungi was born into a Muslim family. Her late father Ahamada Kimali Musoke disowned her due to her dressing and choice of career. Furthermore, her mother Edith Kabazungu revealed that she was born out of a secret affair with her husband's brother, Ahamada. Sheebah has six step-siblings with whom she doesn’t seem to be having a good relationship.
Sheebah Karungi went to Kawempe Muslim Primary School. She then joined Midland High School. However, Sheebah did not finish her secondary education as she dropped out to become a dancer.
Sheebah’s path into the music industry began as a dancer. At the age of 15, she joined a dance group called ‘Stingers’ to make money. Her stay with Stingers was short-lived as she joined a music group called 'Obsessions' in 2006. She replaced Cleopatra Kohaire, an actress, musician, television & radio presenter, who resigned to pursue her interests. Ronnie Mayanja was the manager of the group.
Obsessions performed in bars, clubs and karaoke. As the group developed, they began to make their own music which was Sheebah’s entry point into music. The group produced two songs after which it split.
This was the beginning of Sheebah’s solo career. In 2010, she released a number of singles - “kunyenyenaza” produced by Washington, “Bulikyekola” produced with the help of KS Alpha, and “Baliwa” featuring Coco Finger.
Her breakthrough came with the release of two songs, “Automatic” and “Ice Cream” both written by Sizzaman. She followed the two with another hit single, “Twesana”.
The following year, Sheebah released a five-track EP titled “Ice Cream”. It included the hit single “Ice Cream”, “Jordan”, “Mudongo”, “Love Hater” and “Tswesana”.
Sheebah received numerous awards for her songs. On four occasions, from 2015 to 2018, Sheebah was named the Artist of the Year at the HiPipo Music Awards. She also won the Best Female Artist in 2017 and 2018.
In 2017, she was part of Coke Studio, released her second album “Karma” and won an award for the most downloaded song accolade during the Mdundo Awards.
In 2018, Sheebah released her third album “Omwooyo”.
Sheebah works under the Team No Sleep management that has seen her music get massive airplay locally and internationally. On YouTube, some of her most popular songs include “Nakyuka” with over 5 million views, “Weekend ft Run Town” with over 4 million views, “Mummy yo”, “John Rambo”, “Nkwatako”, and “Silwana” all with over 3 million views.
Away from music, Sheebah runs a couple of businesses. She has a hairline called “Sheebah by Natna Hair” and a clothing line, Sheebah Collections.
Sheebah also launched a bar and events business named The Red Terrace and Red Event.
Sheebah also has a company, Sheebahs Establishments Company whose aim is to provide women with sanitary towels, a course that’s close to Sheebah’s heart.
Growing up, she never had the privilege of using sanitary towels. Her mother cut a piece of cloth for her to use when she got her first period. She used her dancing to earn money which she would use to buy herself some pads. Even though that provided much relief to her, it also brought its own complications.
The scent of the pads caused irritation even after she switched brands. She was then introduced to tampons when she joined Obsessions as they were not allowed to perform with pads. She has never looked back again.
All Sheebah wants is for every girl to have access to sanitary towels. Through Sheebah Foundation, the company is able to distribute pads and facilitate menstrual hygiene.
Sheebah is also known for acting. She played the role of Shakira in the movie "Queen of Katwe". The movie released in 2016 was directed by Mira Nair. She acted in this movie alongside big names like Lupita Nyong’o.
Sheebah’s love life remains a mystery. She has stated that there isn’t a man who can satisfy her. When asked by a fan who warms her bed, she basically wrote “self-service”. A far lighter phrase than what she posted.
This has fuelled numerous speculation that she could be a lesbian or a bi-sexual. She was also thought to have been involved with her manager Jeff Kiwa.
It’s not surprising that most female musicians wear revealing clothes. Even so, Uganda’s Pornographic Control Committee warned Sheebah Karungi of her dressing. The committee’s chairperson Dr Anette Kezaabu dared to use the law to get Sheebah to dress up if she wouldn’t do it by herself.
Sheebah is not afraid of making daring moves. In 2018, she started a #FreeTheNippleCampaign as a way to try and get women to go bra-less. To prove that, she posted a picture in a black vest showing her nipples.
Sheebah Karungi’s love life is shrouded in mystery. She hasn’t been seen in public with a man. When asked on social media, Sheebah gave a witty response “self-service”. Well, you can interpret this the way you want but this has fuelled speculation that the 31-year-old might be a lesbian. Sheebah has gone on record stating that she doesn’t desire marriage. Plus, she has also stated that no man can be able to satisfy her.
Sheebah Karungi loves her cars. With her success in music, she has managed to buy herself a Volkswagen Touareg 2005 model and a Range Rover which reportedly costs 150 million.
Sheebah Karungi grew up in a single-roomed house in Kawempe with her mum. But for all the success she has gathered over the years, she has finally managed to build herself a mansion located in Munyonyo. She described the house as her biggest accomplishment.
Sheebah’s net worth of $1 - $5 million comes from the properties she owns, her music career and the businesses she runs.
