Bobi Wine is a name that needs no introduction both in Uganda and abroad. The musician turned politician dominated headlines in 2021 when he contested for the most powerful seat in the country, and although he didn’t win the polls, he sure did win many hearts.

When people celebrate Bobi Wine, they often forget to celebrate his pillar of strength, and better half, who has stood with him through the highs and lows of his life.

In honour of Ugandan women in leadership, today we take a look at Bobi Wine’s wife. Here is everything you didn’t know about the Ghetto president’s first lady.

Who is Bobi Wine’s wife?

Bobi Wine’s wife and mother of his children is a beautiful Ugandan woman called Barbie Kyangulanyi.

Barbie Kyagulanyi was born Barbara Itungo, on 7th September 1985, to doctors Gershom Kagaju and Joy Kagaju, and she is a Munyankole from the Ankole tribe.

Bobi Wine’s wife grew up in  Kyempene, Rugarama Sub County, Ntungamo district, in the Western Uganda region.

What does Bobi Wine’s wife do?

Although most people only know her as Bobi Wine’s wife, Barbie Kyangulanyi is a lot more than just that.

To begin with, she is an accomplished author. In 2012,  she published her first book Golden Memories of a Village Belle.

Bobi Wine's wife is also a philanthropist. She founded and is the sitting CEO of an NGO called Caring Hearts Uganda. Her foundation mainly focuses on teaching children, particularly school girls, the value of staying in school and abstinence. The foundation also donates basic toiletries like menstrual pads to girls.

Besides that, Barbie also manages their One Love Beach in Busabala, and to top it all off, she is also a dutiful mother and wife.

She starred in and was the Executive Producer of their reality TV show, The Ghetto President, which showed the daily lives of the Kyagulanyi family.

Is Barbie Kyagulanyi educated?

Yes, Bobi Wine’s wife is university-educated. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Social work and Social Administration from Makerere University and a Master's degree in Human Rights.

Where did Bobi Wine and his wife meet?

Bobi Wine met his wife in 2000 at the National Theatre, where they were they were cast as leading characters in a play. 

As if the play was predicting their future, Bobi Wine played the role of president while Barbie was the first lady. Isn’t it interesting that the two almost became the real president and first lady in real life?

According to Barbie, Bobi used to walk her home after the play, and all the chatting resulted in feelings, and as they say, the rest is history.

After 11 years of dating, Bobi and his wife exchanged vows in a beautiful wedding ceremony that was held at Rubaga Cathedral Kampala.

The ceremony was officiated by Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. It was graced by some of the most prominent people in Uganda, including the members of the Buganda royal family, among them the Nnabagereka (queen.) Other notable guests included Jose Chameleone and his wife, Daniella.

Bobi Wine and his wife Barbie have been blessed with four beautiful children- Solomon Kampala Kyagulanyi, Shalom Namagembe Kyagulanyi, Shadraq Shilling Kyagulanyi, and Suubi Shine Nakaayi Kyagulanyi.

The Kyagulanyi family lives in their palatial home located in Magere, in North Kampala.
