The truth about Jacob Oulanyah’s illness
Shortly after he was sworn in as Speaker of parliament, Jacob Oulanyah flew to the UK where he stayed for over a month and his duties were handled by Deputy Speaker Anita Among.
His absence did not escape the public’s eye and it didn’t take long before rumours about his health started spreading like bushfire with the common belief that he had contracted COVID-19 and was receiving treatment abroad.
After missing in action for close to two months, Jacob Oulanyah came out in July 2021 to dismiss claims that he had been ill and dismissed claims that he had been receiving treatment in the UK, explaining that he had been on a private visit to see his family in the UK.
Oulanyah resumed his duties and he last presided over Parliament on 21 December 2021. He was however far from full recovery from his illness that eventually claimed his life.
A concerned Anita Among paid Jacob Oulanyah a visit at his home on the 29th of January 2022 after she and her associates failed to contact him on his telephone for several days. She found him in a critical state in bed where he had difficulty speaking.
He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment where doctors recommended that he be flown out of the country for further treatment. He was flown to Seattle, in the United States on the 4th of February 2022 for treatment of an unspecified illness.
Jacob Oulanyah’s death and funeral
Jacob Oulanyah was pronounced dead on the 20th of March 2022 after receiving treatment for several weeks in the US.
The news of his demise was broken by President Yoweri Museveni through his official Twitter handle. Describing him as a good cadre, the president also explained in a tweet that he had delayed the announcement of Jacob Oulanyah’s death as he wanted his children to be informed first.
He was laid to rest in his ancestral home in Lalogi, Omoro district on the 8th of April 2022. The burial ceremony which was graced by prominent politicians including Vice President Jessica Alupo was officiated by the archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Mr Steven Kaziimba Mugalu. He was accorded a 17-gun salute before he was lowered into his final resting place.
It was later revealed that Jacob Oulanyah had been battling cancer and according to his post-mortem report he had succumbed to multiple organ failure.
